YOUR NEW Puppy Shopping list
Just like having a Baby!
Here is a list of what you need.
And of ccourse I am sure you already have a puppy bed n mind!
BASICS:
Paper towels (a lot of paper towels :)
Baby Blankets. We buy ours at Target. These ar NOT the thin recieving blanket it is the one a little thicker. Towels can also be used. Only they are not as soft.
Once puppy is reliably crate trained, a "real" crate bed can be used. NOT BEFORE
Old Blanket or Towel(s) to cover wire Crate at night. Cover three sides only
Cotton balls for cleaning ears. Ear Cleaner
Acrylic (Fake) Nail file, cardboard with sandpaper type, for smoothing nails. Especially important
100% Pure canned Pumpkin (from the baking isle of your grocery store)
Pumpkin is a good source of fiber. When puppy has diarrhea or constipation, a teaspoon with every meal for several days should help alleviate symptoms. Freeze excess in ice cube tray.
Baby Gate(s)
Try Wal-Mart/ Target baby department - generally more choices and cheaper than pet stores (Beware that horizontal bars provide a foot-hold for climbing puppies. Also consider spacing between bars, as some times it is large enough for little puppies to get caught)
Nature's Miracle (gallon size) or similar stain/odor neutralizer
Bitter Apple (bitter taste deters dogs from biting, licking, and chewing)
Pooper Scooper & bags
Food and water bowls (2 sets of ceramic) NO PLASTIC THEY HOLD BACTERIA
Storage bin for dry food
Adjustable Nylon collar w/plastic clasp
6 - 10 inch (25 - 35 cm) size
I.D. Tag
(e.g. See http://boomerangtags.com for their flat collar tags for adjustable collars. They also sell collars with tags included for the smaller sized dogs).
6 foot (1.8 m) leash
15 foot (4.6 m) or longer (up to 50 foot (15 m)) training leash(es)
Wire Crate for crate training. We have found that the Best crate for your money is at Wal-Mart. You will get a fold down black coated crate with 2 doors dor as low as $32.00
Double door folding crate with divider (we've heard good things about both Midwest and Precision brands) We rexommend a 32 or 34 inch crate
Travel Crate for car until puppy is big enough to wear a car harness. If your puppy was shipped to you The shipping crate is the Travel Crate. Again Best prices our at Wal-Mart for this item.
Treats:
Puppy Biscuits. We like Buddy Buicuits. They make a "itty Bitty" biscuit for the little dogs! Old Mother hubbard Puppy buscuits in bac liver, peanut butter or puppy flavor
Bil Jac Liver treats. small milk carton.
Chicken Jerky Dried Chicken treats. These are all natural and the PUPPIES FAVORITE
Training Treats
Soft & tiny treats work best for training. Pieces of cheese, hotdogs, or homemade Liver Training Treats. Honey Nut Cherrios
Good Chews and Toys:
X-Small to Small Kong Toy
Stuffed Dog Toys w/ squeakers. Different textures and sizes.
Vinyl Squeaky toys
Latex Squeaky toys
Balls (squeaky rubber balls)
Rope toys (e.g. Booda bones)
Nyla-Bone "Puppy" bone. This is actually a real flavor. WE find these at Pets Mart and Petco
NO cow hooves or NO bully sticks for chewing
NO cow ears for chewing. Until the puppies are at least 6 months.
Grooming Supplies:
Pin and Soft Slicker Brush
Small/Medium tooth Comb
Blunt tipped curved blade scissors
Tooth cleaning chews like "Greenies"
Puppy Shampoo. Natural is Best! Earth Bath, Mela Corp, etc.
Puppy Conditioner / Grooming Spray Look for natural products
Ear Wash solution
Plier-style nail clippers w/nail guard
Blood Stop Powder
Additional Items:
Bell to hang by back door. Pier One
Helps with house training, they learn to ring the bell to alert you that they need to go out. Some use large craft bells, some use cow bells (e.g. http://www.bell-outlet.com/cowbellb.htm)
Ownership & Training books
Recommendations include: "The Dog Listener", "Puppies for Dummies", and many more...
Make appointment with Vet for new puppy wellness check up. Needs to be done in 48 hours after arrival

Nutri-Cal. To be purchased prior to puppy arriving. Can be found at the vets, on-line, Pets Mart.
You will need right from the first two hours of greeting the puppy.
